Is Jamaica similar to Nigeria?

Advice

No they are not similar at all. Much of Nigeria is prone to religious extremism, burning churches, killing Christians, then there is boko haram which is literally against women pursuing higher education and other forms of gender equality. Jamaica has one of the highest percentage of women in higher education in the world. Jamaica has equal pay for equal work. It’s not even close how different these two countries are.

Advice

I am not a Nigerian but am intelligent, open-minded and informed enough to know that Nigeria has many positive aspects to it’s culture and way of life and not just the narrow picture which you paint of the country

Advice

Indeed, every country has good and bad. Jamaica’s murder rate is frightening for a country not at war. And the lottery scammers do play second fiddle to Nigeria.I just pointed out some of the obvious differences. Start digging and the differences become a lot clearer.

Advice

I moved for university and for the appeal of island living, not particularly in that order. I looooooove the beach and the mountains all featured in the same landscape.

There are quite a few Nigerians here, and there has recently been a number of African-themed events (so think oktoberfest vibes/setting but with Nigerian cultural elements and activities).

Advice

Lol bruh… idk about that. There are certainly people who don’t value education much here but Jamaicans are top performers in academics. It’s really common that a B student in Jamaican end up getting straight “A”s in the US when they migrate during high school.

Advice

Exactly this. Me and my cousin are the same age, and when she came to the US and enrolled in school at the same grade as me, she was surprised to see how far behind the US education system was compared to Jamaica

Advice

Ok here goes. I’m from Jamaica and I’ve been to many places in Africa.

Never been to Nigeria but I’ve been to Ghana. Are they the same? No

But the similarities are striking, if you go to Ghana particularly Accra it’s literally the same thing like Kingston.

Jamaican people please stop thinking unno more similar to England or Italy. Wi a black people. Big up Nigeria, Jamaica and di whole a di black diaspora ✊🏿

Advice

No I meant Nigeria. While the majority of our ancestors do come from Ghana(The Gold Coast), many of them do come from the areas that make up Nigeria, and Benin as well due to proximity hence why it’s inaccurate to say Jamaicans are not from the same part of Africa as Nigerians

Advice

“Jamaicans are not even from the same part of African as Nigerians.” Lol, do you care to tell us where Jamaicans really come from? Most Jamaicans obviously originate from West Africa, that includes Nigeria.

Advice

I can’t speak for everyone but I think the issue with your comment in particular is not about if they are culturally similar or not is whether you are presenting wrong information. Jamaica and Nigerians are culturally distinct in our modern world yes, but you must still acknowledge that Jamaicans are descendants of Nigerians in some way even if not the majority of us

Advice

Hmm never been to Nigeria or know much about the internal culture to make a fair comparison but from the Nigerians I’ve met in the US and the two Naija women I’ve dated briefly I think they are similar to Jamaicans in terms of vibes, love for drip (fashion), and cool ppl to be around

Advice

Even though the majority of black Jamaicans are likely to have some Nigerian DNA, I would say that culturally Jamaican’s and Nigerians are very dissimilar. And the place itself are not even close in terrain/look/feel. I’ve visited Nigeria many times and I don’t see many similarities at all to Jamaica. Some parts of Ghana are much more similar to Jamaica than any part of Nigeria I’ve visited.

Advice

The issue is are the two countries the same or are the two countries different. It is not about which country is better or worse. I pointed out facts that show that the countries are very different in two areas, women’s rights and the education of women. The majority of the teaching profession, tertiary educated people in Jamaica are women. The majority of the nurses, over 90% are women. The majority of the students at the University of the West Indies Mona are women. Those are not opinions. Is jamaica corrupt yes, but that is not unique to jamaica so it’s not an obvious difference. Does jamaica have homophobia, yes, again, not unique to Jamaica so it’s not an obvious difference. I mentioned BH because of its history in attacking women in schools, and it’s violent extremism against women , every country has kidnapping so that is not an obvious difference again. A lot of Jamaicans leave the country for economic reasons because the economy is shit. There is no spin here, like I said pointing out obvious differences.
